Why Every Great Factory Starts With One Number

The one decision that quietly makes every other decision for you

For a long time I started factories the wrong way. I'd stand on an empty patch of foundation with a part in mind — Smart Plating, say, for the Space Elevator that was blocking my whole progression — and the first question in my head was always how. How do I lay this out. Where do the Assemblers go. Which way do the belts run. Good questions, all of them, and every single one was premature, because I hadn't answered the only question that actually shapes the factory.

Not how much can I build. Not how do I build it. Just: how many do I want per minute?

The Space Elevator that ate my afternoon

Smart Plating is a friendly-looking part. Two Reinforced Iron Plates and two Rotors into an Assembler, and out come two Smart Plating. Clean. The trap is that the Rotor underneath it is not friendly at all — a Rotor wants Iron Rods and a genuinely upsetting number of Screws, so a "simple" Smart Plating line is secretly a Screw factory wearing a disguise.

I knew all that. So I decided to be safe and build "plenty." Plenty is not a number, but it felt like one at the time. I built what looked like a lot of Assemblers, backed them with what looked like a lot of Screws, and fed the whole thing from my starter smelters. And I ended up with the worst of both outcomes at once: a Smart Plating line that was somehow both too big and too small. Too big, because it drank more iron than my little base could supply, so the front of it kept starving. Too small, because even starving it was overkill for what the Space Elevator actually wanted right then, which was a modest, steady trickle — not a firehose.

I'd optimized for a feeling instead of a number, and a feeling scales terribly.

The number was the plan all along

The fix, when I finally found it, wasn't a better layout. It was picking a rate and meaning it. I looked at what I actually needed — enough Smart Plating to finish the Elevator phase in a reasonable evening, not a monument to Smart Plating — and I settled on a specific, unglamorous number of parts per minute. And the instant I had that number, the entire factory stopped being a design problem and became arithmetic.

Because that's the quiet truth of Satisfactory production: recipes are fixed and everything scales linearly. The moment you commit to a rate at the top, every number underneath it is determined. That many Smart Plating means exactly that many Rotors and Reinforced Iron Plates. That many Rotors means exactly that many Iron Rods and that specific, painful pile of Screws. That many Reinforced Iron Plates means that many Iron Plates and more Screws still. All the way down to the ore. There is no second decision. There is one number, and then there is multiplication.

I had it backwards for months. I thought the rate was the last thing you tuned — build the factory, then see how fast it goes. It's the opposite. The rate is the firstthing you choose, because it's the only real choice in the whole build. Everything else is consequence.

A round number is a trap

Here's the part that took me longer to admit: the number should come from what you need, not from what looks tidy. I love a round number as much as anyone. Sixty of something per minute feels correct in a way that's almost physical — one belt, one Mk.1's worth, very satisfying. But "sixty" is a number I chose because it pleased me, not because anything downstream asked for it.

The good rates are almost never round. They come from a real constraint: the exact throughput the next machine in the chain consumes, or what a single node upstream can actually supply, or the amount that lets one belt tier carry the whole flow without a second line. When I started letting the demand pick the number instead of my sense of neatness, my factories got smaller, calmer, and — this is the strange part — more satisfying, not less. There's a particular pleasure in a line that produces exactly what the thing above it eats, with nothing backing up and nothing running dry. A round number almost never gives you that. The right number does.

Watch the number fall down the chain

It's worth walking through once, because seeing the cascade is what made me a believer. Say I commit to a Smart Plating rate — pick any number, it doesn't matter which, that's the point. That number instantly fixes how many Reinforced Iron Plates and how many Rotors I need, because the Assembler recipe is one plate and one rotor for every plating, locked. No judgment involved. Just the ratio.

Now follow the Rotor branch down, because that's where it gets loud. Every Rotor is Iron Rods and Screws, and the Screws are the part that mugs you — a Rotor wants five times as many Screws as it does Rods. So the Smart Plating number I picked at the top, two layers up, has already decided a Screw demand large enough to need its own wall of Constructors. And the Reinforced Iron Plates I also need? Those want Screws too. Two separate branches of my "simple" factory both reaching for the same part, and the size of that pile was decided the instant I chose the plating rate. I didn't decide the Screws. The one number decided the Screws.

That's the whole thing in miniature. One choice at the top, and the Iron Rods, the Screws, the Iron Plates, the ingots feeding all of them, the ore feeding those — every last figure falls out of it automatically. When I used to build without picking the number, I was effectively making all of those decisions by accident, discovering the Screw wall halfway through and pretending I'd planned for it. Choosing the rate first just means I find out what I'm signing up for while I can still change my mind.

What picking the number first actually does

Once I started every factory with the rate, three annoyances I'd lived with for a hundred hours just quietly went away.

The Screws stopped ambushing me. When the Rotor count falls straight out of the Smart Plating rate, the Screw demand isn't a nasty surprise I discover mid-build — it's just the next line of the same arithmetic, sitting there before I've placed anything, telling me exactly how many Constructors I'm signing up for. I got to decide whether that number was worth it before I built it, which is the only useful time to decide.

The over-building stopped. When the number comes from demand, you build the factory the demand deserves and not one Assembler more. My bases stopped being a graveyard of half-scaled lines I'd abandoned when they got too big to feed.

And the starving stopped, because a rate you chose on purpose is a rate you can check against your supply before you commit. That many Iron Ingots per minute either fits what your smelters make or it doesn't, and you find that out while it's still a number on a plan instead of an empty belt in a factory.

The line that came out right

The build that finally proved it to me was Modular Frames, and what made it click was that I didn't pick the number out of the air — I let something downstream pick it for me. I was building toward Heavy Modular Frames, and a Heavy Modular Frame eats Modular Frames at a specific, un-round rate. So instead of choosing a Modular Frame number I liked, I took the number my Heavy Frame line would actually consume and built exactly that.

A Modular Frame is three Reinforced Iron Plates and twelve Iron Rods per batch, so once that top number was fixed by real demand, the plates and the rods fell straight out of it, and the ingots under those, and the ore under those. I checked the ingot figure against what my smelters could supply — it fit, barely — and built the whole thing in one pass. No teardown. No starving front end. No monument. It produced precisely what the Heavy Frame line upstream of it wanted, and the two clicked together like they'd been designed as one thing, which, because I'd started from the shared number, they had been.

That's the feeling I chase now. Not a big factory. A factory that fits — where every rate is somebody's real demand and nothing is a vanity round number I picked because it looked nice on a belt.

Pick the part. Pick the rate. That's the plan.

This is the entire discipline, and it's almost too simple to write down: before you place a single foundation, choose the one number. What part, and how many per minute. Everything a Satisfactory factory is — every machine count, every belt, every ingot per minute at the bottom of the chain — is just that one number, multiplied out through fixed recipes. Get the number right and the factory designs itself. Guess at it, or reach for something round, and you'll spend the evening discovering what the number should have been.

So now I do the boring, powerful thing first. I decide the rate, and I let the rest fall out of it — pick the part, set the number, and watch the whole chain resolve underneath it down to the ore. Then I build, once, at exactly the size the number asked for.

Every factory I've ever been proud of started with one number chosen on purpose. Every one I tore down started with a feeling. These days I choose the number.
